Gua Sha Engraving for Blumiral
I love when clients come to me with unique requests, especially when it involves non-traditional materials. I’ve calligraphed and engraved countless perfume bottles, tumblers and stemware, but there’s a certain excitement that comes with testing a brand new surface. In the past, I’ve customized real leaves, oyster shells and lemons as place cards, which each require special considerations and different tools.
This May, I was delighted when I was approached by Sundae Creative about personalizing gua sha stones for the launch of Blumiral Skincare, a new Canadian brand. Gua sha is usually made of rose quartz or jade and given its smooth, non-textured surface, it is a great candidate for engraving. I always request a sample product ahead of a live event, so there are no surprises onsite. In my studio, I determine ideal placement for the inscription, what bur size to use and at what speed to run my engraving drill. I also text wax colours, to see how different metallics read on the chosen surface. For Blumiral, I engraved each rose quartz gua sha stone with guest names and filled the engraving with silver, which gave lovely shine and contrast.
Cheers to engraving more unique and organic surfaces!
