Introduction to Copperplate Calligraphy

Explore the world of pointed pen calligraphy!

This 2.5 hour hands-on workshop is specifically designed for beginners and no prior calligraphy experience is required.

This introductory workshop includes:

  • a balance of demonstrations and quiet focused writing time

  • a brief history of Copperplate calligraphy

  • an overview of the essential tools

  • explanation of proper pen hold for both right and left handers

  • detailed instruction on the basic strokes

  • lowercase letterform construction


Class Size: up to 25 students

Onsite Logistics: Tables should be of standard height and each student will need a chair with back support. If there are more than 8 students, the venue should have the capacity to project demonstrations (via document camera) to a large screen.

Instructor Fee: $950.00 CAD plus GST/QST plus a supply fee* per student

*Supply Fee, Option 1: $25.00 (per student) + GST/QST, to include an oblique penholder, nib, small jar of ink, handouts, resource guide, worksheets and a personalized name card by Joy. All supplies are for students to keep.

Supply Fee, Option 2: $10.00 (per student) + GST/QST (to include an oblique pen holder, nib and small jar of ink for workshop use only). Students will leave with handouts, resource guide, worksheets and a personalized name card by Joy.

The Copperplate Majuscules

Now that you’ve been introduced to the Copperplate minuscules, it’s time to focus on the beautiful majuscule letterforms.

This 2.5 hour workshop includes:

  • a balance of demonstrations and quiet focused writing time

  • instruction on the basic majuscule strokes

  • uppercase letterform construction
